SITCOM

THE HONEYMOONERS “CLASSIC 39” EPISODES

The Honeymooners is an American television sitcom that originally aired from 1955 to 1956, created by and starring Jackie Gleason, and based on a recurring comedy sketch of the same name that had been part of Gleason’s variety show. It follows the lives of New York City bus driver Ralph Kramden (Gleason), his wife Alice (Audrey Meadows), Ralph’s best friend Ed Norton (Art Carney) and Ed’s wife Trixie (Joyce Randolph) as they get involved with various schemes in their day-to-day living.

Most episodes revolve around Ralph’s poor choices in absurd dilemmas that frequently show his judgmental attitude in a comedic tone. The show occasionally features more serious issues such as women’s rights and social status.

The original comedy sketches first aired on the DuMont network’s variety series Cavalcade of Stars, which Gleason hosted, and subsequently on the CBS network’s The Jackie Gleason Show,[1] which was broadcast live in front of a theater audience. The popularity of the sketches led Gleason to rework The Honeymooners as a filmed half-hour series, which debuted on CBS on October 1, 1955, replacing the variety series. It was initially a ratings success as the No. 2 show in the United States, facing stiff competition from The Perry Como Show on NBC.[2][3] Gleason’s show eventually dropped to No. 19,[3][4] and production ended after 39 episodes (now referred to as the “Classic 39 episodes”).

The final episode of The Honeymooners aired on September 22, 1956, and Gleason sporadically revived the characters until 1978. The Honeymooners was one of the first American television shows to portray working-class married couples in a gritty, non-idyllic manner, as the show is mostly set in the Kramdens’ kitchen in a neglected Brooklyn apartment building.[5] One of the sponsors of the show was Buick.[6]

SEINFELD

THE COMPLETE TELEVISION SERIES

Seinfeld (/ˈsaɪnfɛld/ SYNE-feld) is an American television sitcom created by Larry David and Jerry Seinfeld that originally aired on NBC from July 5, 1989, to May 14, 1998, with a total of nine seasons consisting of 180 episodes. Its ensemble cast stars Seinfeld as a fictionalized version of himself and focuses on his personal life with three of his friends: best friend George Costanza (Jason Alexander), former girlfriend Elaine Benes (Julia Louis-Dreyfus), and eccentric neighbor from across the hall Cosmo Kramer (Michael Richards).

Seinfeld is set mostly in and around the titular character’s apartment in Manhattan‘s Upper West Side in New York City. It has been described as “a show about nothing”, often focusing on the minutiae of daily life.[1] Interspersed in all episodes of the first seven seasons are moments of stand-up comedy from the fictional Jerry Seinfeld, frequently related to the episode’s events.

As a rising comedian in the late 1980s, Jerry Seinfeld was presented with an opportunity to create a show with NBC. He asked Larry David, a fellow comedian and friend, to help create a premise for a sitcom.[2] The series was produced by West/Shapiro Productions and Castle Rock Entertainment and is distributed in syndication by Sony Pictures Television.[nb 1] It was largely written by David and Seinfeld along with scriptwriters. A favorite among critics, the series led the Nielsen ratings in Seasons 6 and 9 and finished among the top two (along with ER of the same network) every year from 1994 to 1998. Only two other shows—I Love Lucy and The Andy Griffith Show—finished their runs at the top of the ratings.[3]

Seinfeld is universally regarded as one of the greatest and most influential American shows of all time.[4][5][6][7][8] Its most renowned episodes include “The Chinese Restaurant“, “The Soup Nazi“, “The Parking Garage“,[9]The Marine Biologist“, “The Contest“,[10] and “The Strike“, which introduced the December 23rd holiday of Festivus. E! named the series the “Number 1 reason [why] the ’90s ruled”.[11] Quotes from numerous episodes have become catchphrases in popular culture.

ROSEANNE

THE COMPLETE TELEVISION SERIES

Roseanne is an American television sitcom created by Matt Williams that originally aired on ABC from October 18, 1988 to May 20, 1997, and was briefly revived from March 27 to May 22, 2018. Starring Roseanne Barr as Roseanne Conner, the series revolves around her family in the fictional town of Lanford, Illinois.[1] Receiving generally positive reviews for its realistic portrayal of a working-class American family, the series reached No. 1 in the Nielsen ratings from 1989 to 1990 in its second season.

During the initial run, the series remained in the top four for six of the nine seasons, and in the top 20 for eight. During the short-lived revival, the series reached No. 3, with an average of 18 million viewers per episode within the span of its nine episodes. In 1993, the episode “A Stash from the Past” was ranked No. 21 on TV Guide‘s 100 Greatest Episodes of All-Time.[2] In 2002, Roseanne was ranked No. 35 on TV Guide‘s 50 Greatest TV Shows of All Time.[3] In 2013, it was ranked No. 32 on TV Guide‘s 60 Best Series of All Time.[4]

In 2018, a revived, 10th season of the show was broadcast, with the original cast returning. Following the success of its premiere, Roseanne was renewed for an 11th season of 13 episodes. ABC reversed its renewal decision and canceled Roseanne on May 29, 2018, after Barr likened former Obama administration official Valerie Jarrett to Planet of the Apes, in a series of comments on Twitter.

A spin-off continuation involving the Conner family without Roseanne, titled The Conners, premiered in October 2018, and became a ratings success, running until 2025.[5]
